I recently participated in the Banco Popular Holiday Special entitled Sonó Sonó Tite Curet. Not only was he one of our most prized composers, he was my mentor and so it was an honor to be involved with this project. The production team Rojo Chiringa was very thorough as well as creative and did a phenomenal job of putting this together, the arrangements of his songs were very well done and also the piece is visually exceptional. There is no option for English subtitles or audio so that is unfortunate, but it is worth seeing, look for it in Amazon both in CD and DVD.

The works of Puerto Rican composer Tite Curet Alonso will be celebrated in Banco Popular’s annual Christmas season special this year.
The special, “Sonó, sonó,” will air Sunday at 8 p.m. on the island’s main TV stations.

The title of the special is a reference to the blocking of Curet’s works from the airwaves for decades due to a legal dispute with his publisher. The composer, known as the “Poet of the People,” died in 2003, six years before the federal court in Puerto Rico freed his songs from the grip of the Association of Latin American Music Writers and Composers (Acemla).

“Sonó, sonó” kicks off with a look back at Curet’s life and runs through the Guayama native’s most acclaimed compositions including “Sobre una tumba humilde,” “Plantaciónadentro,” “Esto es el guaguancó,” “Pa’ los caseríos” and “Con los pobres estoy.”

It includes interpretations of Curet’s classics by a range of artists including Lalo Rodríguez, Andy Montañez, Ismaelito Rivera, Tego Calderón, Luis Daniel Colón, Cheo Feliciano, Calle 13 and the Roberto Roena Orchestra.

The special was produced by the Rojo Chiringa collective under the direction of Gabriel Coss. As always, proceeds from the sale of DVD and CD copies will go to the noprofit Banco Popular Foundation.

Banco Popular has also set up and exhibition at its Hato Rey headquarters that pays tribute to Curet through photographs, newspaper articles, show bills and recordings. The “La fonda de Tite” will be open to visitors into January.
